Has anyone had a direct debit reinstated by the bank after you cancelled it?

My bank has reinstated a direct debit that i had previously cancelled. When i phoned them about this, they said that it is within the rights of the company that i originally set up the direct debit with. Has anyone else had this experience?

It can be done. Check this with your bank. In the uk a direct debit can be reinstated without your knowledge.

No way can this be done, once you have stopped it in writing or by signing something, or even online, they cannot reinstate it. Unless you filled out another DD form and the company sent it to bank??

I worked in banks for 25 years and it happened all the time, especially with health clubs and gyms and stuff like that.

    Hiya,

it depends on the bank you are banking with. I would double-check this with the Consumer Advice Bureau, but I believe you can by rights put a mandate or prevent any transactions going through pending 48 hour notice (I might be wrong here so please research accordingly).

But what tends to happen in these scenarios is that the company that you had initially signed an agreement with will continue to try and draw money out from your account – I believe it’s the part of the Direct Debit agreement, so you really need to ensure that both parties are informed, sufficient funds are in the account and ample notice is given in due course.

Unless you pre arranged for it to be reinstated at a later date, It isn’t allowed to happen. I would contact the bank again and kick up a fuss (threaten to leave) they’ll correct it pretty sharpish. (If their was a pre existing contract period with say a mobile phone company, gym etc you are probably contractually obliged to pay out the remainder)

For example if you sign upto a gym or get a new phone on contract, there are minimum contract lengths. So if you get an 18 month contract, and set it up as a Direct Debit from your current account, then the company your buying the phone from will send the paperwork to the bank telling us whats happening. On that form will be your contract with the phone company, and you have signed saying you confirm that they can take X amount out for the next 18 months. Now its illegal to breach a contract, so if you want to cancel it after 6 months the bank will have to reinstate it, in terms of the contract you signed.

I HAD A DIRECT DEBIT REINSTATED BY A FINANCE COMPCNY AFTER I PUT MY DEBTS INTO A DEBT MANAGEMENT PLAN. I CANCELLED THE DD BUT NOTICED THE NEXT MONTH IT WAS STILL ACTIVE, I THOUGHT I CAN’T OF DONE IT PROPERLY SO CANCELLED IT AGAIN. THEN ON FRIDAY THE 13th OF ALL DAYS, I NOTICED THAT £680 HAD BEEN TAKEN BY THESE SHARKS, THEY HAD SOMEHOW REINSTATED IT WITHOUT ADVISING ME OR THAT THEY WERE GOING TO TAKE THAT AMOUNT (WHICH ANYONE SHOULD AS PER THE DIRECT DEBIT GUARANTEE) HOW CAN THEY DO THIS? I COMPLAINED TO MY BANK STATING THE DIRECT DEBIT GUARANTEE AND THEY REFUNDED ME THE £680. TOP MARKS TO NATIONWIDE!
