What is standard when opening up a bank account in the UK?

I’m filling out an application to open up a London bank account while I live in the US and Australia. Surprisingly however they don’t even ask me for my social security #. All they seem to ask for is a notarized copy of my ID from the form I’m reading. Am I missing something here? I would hate to go through the trouble of getting an overseas account only to find out that I didn’t give them everything they needed.

There are many scams involving fake Bank accounts ==
make sure you are dealing with a real Bank and check their address by independent means (anyone can claim to be ‘Barclays Bank of London’, address “2 Ripoff Ave, London, AB1 S6” == indeed, some fraudsters even go to the trouble of ‘registering’ their fake Bank and setting up a web site for it == see link).

Then just ring them up …
