How long does it take to open a bank account?
Hi,
I’m about to apply for a bank account with the Bank Of Scotland. I was wondering how long it will take for this account to become active after applying and, equally as important, when I will receive my Visa Electron card?
N.B. I’m not transferring from any other accounts, I’m just starting as new.

You should call them and ask them as they know best how to answer you. Each bank may have different things.

Well if your opening an every day run of the mill banking account, it should only take about 30 mins an its a great idea an good way to control your money but I wouldn’t get into the direct bill pay cause they take the money right out of your account even if its not thier leaveing you broke an owning a fine for insuffisiant funds, unless money isnt an issue an 2nd make sure to keep money at home cause you never know whats going to happen…

Just minutes to open a bank account. Bring photo ID and 2 utility bills addressed to you, as proof of residence. A current account will probably give you a debit card at first. Ask for it if they don’t offer it. It will come by mail within a week or so, and the individual PIN will come by separate mail, but your account will be active from the minute you deposit money in. Visa Electron is a debit card, and you have to have the money already in your account to be able to use it – you can’t go overdrawn. Just make sure you keep enough money in the account, and you will be fine.

Providing you take the correct ID they should be able to open your account the same day. Card and pin takes around 7 days
