How long does a bank hold on to your personal information after you close your bank account?

Do the bank hold on to our personal details (if they do then how long they hold on for?) or do they delete our personal details from their systems straight away when we close our bank account?

Companies have to keep their financial records for at least seven years so that the tax man can call on them if need be. I would expect banks to have to do at least that, and possibly more.
