The best place to start as an auditor is “The Big 4”, including PWC, Deloitte & Touche, Ernst &Young and KPMG.
The second best place are “Tier 2” auditing firms like Grant Thornton, BDO Seidman and some big local players.
The third best place is a small local audit firm. You’ll need to get your audit hours in order to get credit toward your CPA.
It’s been quite some time since I started at a Big 4 accounting firm, but my ballpark guess (using my starting salary and then bootstrapping it using CPI), means that starting salaries should be about US$38,000/year and you get a good chunk of time off during the summer.
