What do I do if my accountant sent all my tax information to the wrong person after filing?

After filing, my accountant keeps our tax documents for further evaluation. Once they believe my taxes are prepared correctly, they make a binder called “2008 Tax Documents” and send everything back to me. They are being very vague about the whereabouts of my documents, and I get the feeling they accidentally sent it to someone else. What kind of action do I take?

First, they should make sure that your taxes are prepared correctly and complete the “further evaluation” BEFORE filing, not after. Prior to making sure that everything is correct and completing the “further evaluation”, there should be no filing (except for sending the request for an extension, if necessary).

Second, if the documents are yours, simply tell them to return the documents to you, immediately. If they need copies for their own use or for future evaluation, they can make photocopies. If they have sent them to someone else, they should have that person return them.
