How hard is it to become a accountant?
I’m planning to go to college and studying accounting, but before i start can someone tell me what is like working in this job field? Are the maths difficult in accounting? Can i be accountant if i’m very good with algebra? Thank you.

The maths aren’t really that difficult for the most part. If you are good at algebra and are at least comfortable with formulas, you’ll be alright (glad to hear that you paid attention in algebra class, by the way 🙂 Sometimes, you WILL need to use formulas for certain transactions.
But accounting is really more about categorization. You have to analyze financial transactions and make journal entries into the proper accounts, using proper accounting rules (those are called GAAP = generally accepted accounting principles). I’m not trying to give you the impression that it’s easy though. The further you get into it, the more you get exposed to more and more complicated accounting concepts. Bonds, for example, can be a real pain to learn to account for. Tax accounting is a REAL pain.

But I liked it – I did it for 20+ years, making good money. If you are good at solving like crossword puzzles or enjoy jigsaw puzzles, that’s a good indication that accounting might be a good fit for you.
