Closing a bank account: Can the bank send a check of my outstanding balance to my current address abroad?

I am writing to my bank requesting that my accounts be closed. As I am now living abroad and no longer returning to my previous address in the UK, is it possible to request that they send a check of my outstanding balances to my current address overseas? Are there any regulations preventing them from doing so? If it cannot be completed, how should I deal with my account balance? I can no longer access my online banking either.

No, there are no regulations under the Banking Act that prohibits this transaction, simply write to your bank and present a positive identity and there should not be any problem.

There are no regulations preventing this, but they may be very wary. They may prefer to send an electronic transfer to an account in your name abroad. This is to prevent fraud.

Each bank will have its own peculiarities, so best call or write to find out more.

You may need to be creative;- For example withdrawing the balance before seeking closure. Or transferring the money to friend who then forwards to you, etc.
