Advice on a basic bank account for someone with VERY bad credit?
My husband needs to open a basic bank account but needs a debit card (electron or solo will do) does anyone know of any UK banks that will allow him to open an account? He is in a lot of debt.
Thanks
He has debt with Barclays, will they let him open an account?

About 4 years ago I had very bad credit from past hard times. I was able to get a very good account with Barclays called their basic bank account.
All they needed from me was my drivers license and proof of addres. I got a debit card included with the account and was able to slowly build my credit over the last 4 years.
I would suggest checking the Barclays website or popping into a local branch for more information.

If he has debt with Barclays they probably wouldn’t allow him to open an account. As one of the previous posters mentoned, the Co-op has a good reputation for allowing those with less than perfect credit histories to have an account, particularly if no credit like an overdraft is required..

A friend of mine is bankrupt and I got her to apply to the Co-operative Bank. They are very good and she got a basic bank account with a Visa debit card that can be used in any ATM fre if it has the Link sign. It can be used on line and in the supermarket to get cash back. You can even get cash from a post office.
The Co-op is a very strong bank. It did not go to the government for a bail out. Nor does it buy/lend to arms dealers/ drug lords etc. I have this account as well and it works fine.
